Rollator Soft PU Tyres – 50% Softer, Maintenance-Free | Trionic

Why Conventional Rollator Tyres Must Be Rock Hard

Have you ever wondered why the wheels on a standard rollator feel like solid concrete? It is not an oversight — it is a design constraint imposed by the braking system. On a conventional rollator, the brake pads press directly against the tyre surface to create friction and slow the rollator down. For this to work without the tyre shredding itself in a matter of weeks, the rubber compound must be extremely hard. There is simply no room for softness when the tyre surface doubles as the braking surface.

The consequence is that every bump, crack in the pavement, and uneven surface is transmitted directly up through the wheel, frame, and handles into your hands and wrists. That is the price you pay for a simple braking system.

How Trionic Solves This with Hub Brakes

The Trionic Walker uses a hub brake system. The brake mechanism sits inside the wheel hub and presses against an internal brake disc — never against the tyre surface itself. This means the tyre no longer needs to be hard to withstand braking forces. It is completely decoupled from the brake system and can be engineered purely for ride quality: soft, cushioning, and comfortable.

50% Softer PU Tyres

That is exactly what Trionic has done. The tyres on the Trionic Walker are made from polyurethane (PU) — a material that is 50% softer than the hard rubber used in conventional rollator tyres. In practice, this is a significant and immediately noticeable difference. You still feel the ground beneath you, but without the hard shocks and vibrations that rigid tyres transmit. The road surface informs your walking rather than battering your hands.

Think of it like the difference between walking on concrete in wooden-soled clogs compared to cushioned rubber-soled shoes. The distance is the same but the experience is entirely different.

Maintenance-Free Like Solid Tyres, More Comfortable Like Pneumatics

PU tyres are solid — there is no air-filled inner tube to puncture. You never need to pump them up, never need to repair a flat, and you will never find your rollator sitting on a flat tyre when you need it most. You get all the maintenance-free reliability of conventional solid tyres.

The difference is that you also gain some of the comfort benefits of pneumatic air-filled tyres without their maintenance demands. Trionic's PU tyres occupy a genuinely useful middle ground: far more cushioning than hard solid tyres, without the pressure checks and repair kit that pneumatic tyres require.

More Durable Because They Are Never Used as a Braking Surface

There is another benefit that is easy to overlook. Because the tyre surface is never used as a braking surface, it only wears from contact with the ground. Conventional tyres wear from two sources simultaneously: ground contact and brake friction. Trionic's PU tyres therefore last longer under equivalent use.

The Right Choice for Users Who Want a Softer Ride

If you regularly walk on hard surfaces — paving stones, concrete, tarmac — and find that your hands or wrists tire or ache after a period of walking, softer tyres are one of the most effective improvements you can make. Combined with the pneumatic tyre option available for the Walker 12er and Walker 14er, Trionic's PU tyres offer a practical intermediate step for anyone seeking more comfort without the concern of air pressure management.
